Here’s what our engine diagnostics process looks like.

Scan Tool Code Retrieval (OBD-II Analysis)
We begin by connecting a professional scan tool to the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics system. This retrieves Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), such as P0300 for random misfires or P0171 for lean conditions. These codes identify affected systems, but not the root cause, which is why further testing is required.
Live Data Stream Analysis
Next, we monitor real-time sensor data while the engine is running. This includes oxygen sensor voltage, mass airflow readings and fuel trim values. Abnormal fuel trims, for example, can indicate vacuum leaks, injector issues or airflow problems. This step allows us to see how the engine is behaving under actual operating conditions.
Vacuum Leak and Intake System Testing
We perform a smoke test on the intake system to identify leaks that are invisible to the eye. Even a small vacuum leak can disrupt the air-fuel ratio and trigger performance issues. We inspect intake gaskets, hoses and the throttle body for leaks or restrictions.
Fuel System Pressure and Delivery Testing
Using calibrated pressure gauges, we measure fuel pressure at the rail to confirm proper pump operation. We also assess fuel injector performance, checking for clogging or uneven spray patterns. Poor fuel delivery can cause hesitation, misfires or hard starts.
Ignition System Evaluation
We inspect spark plugs for wear patterns, oil fouling or carbon buildup. Ignition coils are tested for consistent voltage output using specialized tools. Misfires often originate from weak spark delivery, which we confirm through cylinder contribution testing.
Compression and Leak-Down Testing
If internal engine issues are suspected, we perform compression testing to evaluate cylinder health. A leak-down test follows to pinpoint where pressure loss is occurring, whether through valves, piston rings or the head gasket.
Exhaust and Catalytic Converter Testing
We compare upstream and downstream oxygen sensor readings to assess catalytic converter efficiency. A failing converter can restrict exhaust flow and reduce engine performance. We also check for exhaust leaks that may affect sensor readings.
